The Altar of Darkness province is a pile ofв™Ґв™Ґв™Ґв™Ґв™Ґв™Ґwith its climate. I've built public order buildings and done the +8 public order sacrifice whenever possible but I'm lucky if those even get it out of the negatives. It's so bad you can barely prevent rebellions by anything other than camping your army in that province (meaning no expansion). meaning you can't really take it with your starting stack, and you can't really afford the upkeep for additional armies yet.

The only convenient way to keep up in the Vortex race is to take Ghrond (which the game clearly intends, because it gives you a scripted mission for it). In long Battles when you run out off ammo you have some reserve Melee Fighters and if the AI does what they always try: Go hunt down your Ranged Troops and evade your battle line with Hounds, Cav or even light Cav. Not because they really hurt with armorbraking Shots they are also very good melee Fighters. I think they are the best Ranged Units in both Games.

I think the key are the Shades i recruit first. But i did it on legendary and on Very hard 3 times. But mostly you have to go the hard Way and kill 1,5 Full Armies + Garnision with one army. In a perfect situation your friendly neighbor attacks Ghrond and fails or only pluders it and you can just walk in. I restarted several Times and it was always the best way to take Ghrond even before you defeat the Rats.
